Sister Snaps

Watch this space for news of your sisters' major life events, such as notable career achievements, engagements, marriages, and births. We'll also share fun photos of Alpha Chis at KOK events and out and about in the community. Please submit news and photos to Alexa K. Apallas.

Congratulations to Selby Werner (Epsilon Psi, UC Irvine), who was named Outstanding Collegiate Chapter Advisor at the 2015 Volunteer Summit! Check out her photo in the latest issue of The Lyre.

September 24 marked the first Lunch Bunch of the year. Sisters met at Seasons 52 in University Town Center, where we enjoyed a delicious meal at the Chef's Table in our own private room!

Collegiate Relations

We are officially in full swing here at USD! The academic year has started off right with some awesome sisterhood events, like our semester sunrise event. We also just wrapped up our fall retreat, kayaking in La Jolla. Nothing like some sunshine and Alpha Chis! We had a great day enjoying our beautiful home while reflecting on our chapter and what we strive to be. Kappa Lambda is currently gearing up for our Walk a Mile In Her Shoes event on October 22. This is an extremely important event, not only to us, but to the USD community as well. We are thrilled to be celebrating our 10th year anniversary this year and are looking forward to sharing it with all of you.

Philanthropy Corner

This year, we're emphasizing service to the community and will be supporting a number of local charities and worthy causes, including Carol's House, North County Community Services, Embrace a Family, the armed forces, Seacrest Village, Rady Children's Hospital, The Princess Project, and Father Joe's Villages.

In October, we are collecting supplies for Carol's House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence. Requested items include:
  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss
  • Combs and brushes
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Razors
  • Feminine hygiene products (pads, not tampons)
  • Sunscreen
  • Makeup, especially mascara
  • Journals
  • Day planners/mini calendars
  • Sewing kits
  • Post-Its
  • Pens

Please bring your items to the Lunch Bunch on October 15 or drop them off at Donna Poey's house. For more information about our philanthropic endeavors, contact Donna Poey, our Philanthropy Chair.

Take in a Play with KOK!

Pauline Nutt has volunteered to organize an afternoon at the theater. If you'd like to take in a performance at the North Coast Repertory Theatre, peruse the upcoming shows and email Pauline with your preferences. Feel free to list as many plays as you like--we'll attend whichever show gets the most votes. Note that we can get a group rate of $35 to $45 if we have at least 10 attendees. Friends and family are welcome to join us.

National News

Alpha Chi Omega's Outstanding Alumnae Awards recognize exceptional alumnae making positive impacts in their communities, in their professions and in Alpha Chi Omega. The deadline for the 2016 awards is Saturday, October 31, 2015. We'd love to have one of our amazing Kappa Omicron Kappa members receive this recognition! You can find the application online.

Alpha Chi Omega & Mary Kay Domestic Violence Awareness Month Photo Contest
In order to raise awareness of domestic violence and of the work your chapter is doing throughout DVA Month, Alpha Chi Omega, in partnership with Mary Kay, brings our collegiate and alumnae chapters this opportunity.
  • Individual members and chapters post photos throughout the month of your chapter’s work in the fight against domestic violence, according to contest rules.
  • Each chapter may create one photo collage using photos outlined in the contest rules, due October 23.
  • Collages will be posted to the Alpha Chi Omega Facebook page, and the public votes on their favorite photo October 26-30.
  • The grand prize alumnae winner receives $500 to a local domestic violence organization of their choice. Winner to be announced October 30.
For complete contest rules, click here.

The 2016 National Convention will be held in Orlando, FL. Save the date for June 24 – 26, 2016
JW Marriott Grande Lakes Orlando, Florida
Carnation Boutique Announcement

The Carnation Boutique, a long-standing tradition of the Alpha Chi Omega national convention, began as an opportunity for alumnae chapters to raise funds toward their chapter activities and scholarships. In an era when the Internet, on-line shopping and social media didn’t exist, the Carnation Boutique was a bustling place for convention goers to shop for Alpha Chi Omega merchandise and chapters to spread the word about their local endeavors.
Times have changed.
Interest in the Carnation Boutique during recent conventions has declined. Many of our alumnae who dedicated hours to creating materials for their chapter saw little return on their investment of time and resources.
Considering the prevalence and ease of online shopping and the availability of on-site vendors during convention, the Carnation Boutique will not be open for the 2016 convention. Attendees will still have an opportunity to purchase Alpha Chi Omega merchandise on-site from an array of vendors. Please see this letter for additional information and fundraising ideas for alumnae chapters.

To celebrate our founding, we are bringing back the Founders’ Day Challenge starting October 1. We hope you’ll encourage your alumnae chapter members to take the challenge!

While the Founders’ Day Challenge is mainly an online initiative, we will also be providing you with a fundraising vehicle in case any of your members want to participate but aren’t comfortable doing so online. We hope that you will present the information to your members at your Founders’ Day meeting or event this year. Please be on the lookout for an email with more information in September!
Members of the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation team would be delighted to attend an upcoming alumnae chapter meeting to share the impact of gifts to the Foundation.  If you are interested, please contact Rachel Haley, Foundation Coordinator.

Lyre Spotting

Just for fun...send us your photos of lyres spotted in the wild! Thanks to Pauline Nutt for our first submissions. She spotted these while visiting Alpha Chi Omega sister Medora Lethbridge Deason, who has quite a collection of lyres at her home in Chicago.
