Upcoming Events

Wednesday, February 10, 6:00 PM--Valentines and Floral Arrangements at Stephanie Sibley's Home
Learn the basics of the art of arranging flowers over a light salad supper next Wednesday. You'll design a small, attractive bouquet that you can take home in a bud vase and present to your favorite person (or keep for yourself). There's a small charge of $10 for members and $15 for non-members to cover the costs of the flowers and vases. The KOK board will provide the salads.

No green thumb? We hope you'll join us anyway! We'll also be writing out Valentines cards to seniors at the Seacrest Village retirement community and to our Alpha Chi Omega sisters who could use a little TLC.

Please RSVP to Selby Werner and let her know if you plan to participate in the lesson on floral arrangements. That way, we can be sure to stock enough supplies. We hope to see you there!

Thursday, February 11, 7:30 PM--Alpha Chi Omega Night Out, Clay 'N Latte, 20 Main Street, #H-110, Vista
It's Healthy Relationships Week AND MacDowell Month. Come celebrate with your sisters and unleash your inner artist. Eta Kappa Eta is organizing this event--check the AXO San Diego County Alumnae Facebook page for more details and to RSVP.

Alpha Chi Omega Night Out is a international program to recognize sisterhood and emphasize the benefits of friendship in creating and sustaining healthy relationships and good mental health. If you can't join us at Clay 'N Latte, you can still participate with coffee, drinks, lunch, a playdate, or even a phone call with a sister--whatever fits your schedule. And look for the hashtag #AXOnightout on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to see how fellow Alpha Chis are celebrating the day.

Thursday, February 18, 11:30 AM--Lunch Bunch meets at Cucina Enoteca, 2730 Via de Valle, Del Mar. RSVP to Stephanie Sibley.

Saturday, March 5, Date and Time TBD--Alumnae Panhellenic Luncheon
Save the date for a Badge Day Luncheon with Escondido Alumnae Panhellenic (EAP) in the Escondido area. KOK's Panhellenic Representative, Brooke Stites, will have more information after the San Diego Area Panhellenic board meeting on February 6. Contact her for details after that date.

Tuesday, March 8, 6:00 PM--Game Night at Donna Poey's Home (please note the date change)
Philanthropy--Collecting items for Easter baskets for young patients at Rady Children's Hospital

Thanks to all our KOK Members!

Sister Snaps

Watch this space for news of your sisters' major life events, such as notable career achievements, engagements, marriages, and births. We'll also share fun photos of Alpha Chis at KOK events and out and about in the community. Please submit news and photos to Alexa K. Apallas.

Lunch Bunch
The Lunch Bunch enjoyed some winter sunshine, delicious food, and coastal views at Seasalt Bistro in Del Mar last month. Pictured below (clockwise from back to front) are Linda Sheldone, Stephanie Sibley, Alexa K. Apallas, Christine Low (KOK's newest member!), Bobbie Ball, and Pauline Nutt.

Hera Herald
Alexa K. Apallas recently wrote a guest blog post for the Hera Herald, the online magazine for Hera Hub, a co-working space for women. Read her tips for writing compelling content.

Lyre Famous!
Check out the shot of KOK members Rachel Corell, Stacey Hoy and her daughter, Lilly, on page 76 of the winter issue of "The Lyre." Stacey and Lilly, along with Rachel Corell (Iota Nu), volunteered at the Special Olympics World Games held in August at UCLA.

Sister Skill Swap
At our January meeting, several sisters shared their skills. Selby Werner gave us a few etiquette tips (and opened her home to us and provided a delicious pasta dinner). Anna Howard spoke on the importance of estate planning and shared a few questions to ask before hiring a lawyer. Alexa K. Apallas explained how to provide apostrophe abuse (example: it's=it is while its=possessive form). Linda Sheldone demonstrated how to fold a fitted sheet and how to hang knits without stretching out the neckline. Pauline Nutt demonstrated some chi gong healing techniques. And Stacey Hoy taught us some self-defense maneuvers. Thanks to everyone who joined us!

Kappa Lambda Recruitment
Recruitment Advisor Stephanie Sibley, pictured with VP Recruitment Kelle Durrua, assisted the chapter with a very successful recruitment period. Scroll down to Collegiate News for more photos!

Meet Your Board Members

Each month, we'll profile several board members so you can learn more about the KOK leadership team.

Stacey Hoy, VP Collegiate Relations
Stacey is a SoCal native. She grew up in Los Angeles, where her parents still live, and she and her husband of almost 20 years now live in the San Elijo community of San Marcos, along with their 10-year-old daughter, Lilly, and two dogs. Stacey has lived in San Elijo since it was first built 14 years ago. She did take a break from California for college, though--she attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she was initiated into the Nu chapter.

Stacey is a part-time school supervisor. In addition, she is proud to be part of a fundraising-based, mother-daughter team for Origami Owl Custom Jewelry. It allows her to spend more time with Lilly, and she loves the fact that Lilly is learning business skills for her future.

Stacey is a third-degree black belt in TaeKwonDo and should be testing for her fourth degree this spring. It's another activity she shares with her daughter--Lilly just tested for her second degree.

Alpha Chi Omega has helped Stacey form many new connections. "I love the fact that even if we didn't go to school together, we have a connection and we are sisters," she says.

Collegiate News

Kappa Lambda's recruitment was a huge success--the chapter took in 34 new members, bringing total membership to 142. First degree of initiation took place on February 1.

Lyre Spotting

Picture
Pauline Nutt received this lyre candleholder from a friend. She has the "O," and two other friends received the "J" and the "Y." "Together our gifts not only brought us joy, but spelled it out, too!" Pauline says.
