Sister Snaps

Watch this space for news of your sisters' major life events, such as notable career achievements, engagements, marriages, and births. We'll also share fun photos of Alpha Chis at KOK events and out and about in the community. Please submit news and photos to Alexa K. Apallas.

Members of KOK enjoyed two great Founders Day events. We started with the monthly Lunch Bunch gathering at Claire's on Cedros in Solana Beach. And that evening, KOK members and alumnae from several chapters joined Kappa Lambda collegians for a very special alumnae initiation at USD.

We welcomed three new sisters into our bond:
Marirose Torti, mother of Kappa Lambda chapter advisor Ashley Danner
Joan Rush, initiated to honor the memory of her daughter and Kappa Lambda initiate Jaqueline Rush
Carissa Hoover, colleague of Selby Werner and Brooke Stites

Congratulations to Stacey Hoy, who won the KOK membership drive prize basket! Thanks for being a member, Stacey. We hope you enjoy all of your vintage and contemporary Alpha Chi Omega goodies!

If you know of an Alpha Chi who hasn't yet joined an alumnae chapter, encourage her to
submit her membership form today!

Meet Your Board Members

Each month, we'll profile several board members so you can learn more about the KOK leadership team.

Kristin Comunale, Treasurer
Kristin was initiated into the Alpha Phi chapter at the University of Texas, and Houston is her hometown. However, she's moved around quite a bit--she's lived in Alberta, Canada, twice and in California three times. In fact, as a military family, the Comunales move every four years. Kristin is grateful for Alpha Chi Omega because the sisterhood helps her find and form common bonds in each new location. For the past two years, San Diego has been home to Kristin, her husband, Dan, and their two children: Sofia, age 7, and Michael, age 4. Kristin is currently a stay-at-home mom, but in her past life, she was a Navy JAG.

Kristin's hobbies include reading, cooking, and running around with the kids. Her burning desire is to finally travel around Europe. She spent a summer in France as an exchange student in high school but hasn't been back since.

Kristin says that hard work, determination, not accepting "no" for an answer, and trusting her gut have helped her reach her goals.

Donna Poey, VP Philanthropy
Donna is an initiate of the Alpha Kappa chapter at the University of Oregon. She's originally from Glendora, Calif., and is a retired elementary school teacher and homemaker. She and her husband of 27 years, Stan, live in Carlsbad with their dog, Buddy, and their cat, Dolly. They have two grown daughters, Lauren, age 22, and Courtney, age 24.

Donna enjoys travel, reading, and exercise--she's taken Zumba, pilates, and yoga classes. Other hobbies include cooking, wine tasting, and watching college football. Her burning desire is to travel more--and to have her daughters move back to California.

Donna says that her successes in life are due to her strong Christian faith and an amazing community of family and friends.

Selby Werner, VP Programming
Selby was initiated into the Epsilon Psi chapter at UC Irvine and she had such a great experience that she brought her mom, Susan Werner, into the Alpha Chi bond, as well! Susan is one of our alumnae initiates. Selby grew up in Huntington Beach, where her parents still live. She has a younger brother attending the University of Hawaii. Selby now lives in Vista and says that her boyfriend, a captain in the Marine Corps, has helped make San Diego finally feel like home.

Selby is something of a stickler--she's the director of trademark enforcement for Affinity Consultants and she volunteers as a ritual specialist for Alpha Chi Omega. Her ultimate goal is to direct a program that promotes and celebrates the art of graceful living. "I ardently believe that proper manners allow people to be more comfortable in social situations and therefore focus more on genuine interactions with full focus on the other person instead of themselves or their personal behavior," she says. Her secret to success is her commitment to striving for the best version of herself, and her belief that every experience is an opportunity to learn.

Her hobbies include cooking, hiking, learning to golf, wine tasting, and volunteering her time for Alpha Chi Omega. "I am so glad I now have the opportunity to give back to this wonderful sisterhood and even more appreciative of the fact that I get to share the experience with some truly inspiring women!" she says.

Show Your Alpha Chi Pride!

If you haven't treated yourself to any new Greek gear in a while, now's the time! Some sisters have expressed interest in ordering Alpha Chi Omega shirts that are not chapter-specific. Check out the design options below--you can choose a black or gray shirt with text in white or gold foil. Shirts with gold foil are $17.90 plus shipping, while shirts with white text are $16.49 plus shipping. Please note that we must order a minimum quantity to receive these prices.

If you're interested in ordering, use the online form to let us know which design you like best! By filling out the form, you're simply indicating your interest. We'll email everyone who responds with the final design and pricing prior to placing an order.

Philanthropy Corner

Throughout October, KOK members donated toiletries and other items for Carol's House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence. On October 22, several of our board members met at Donna Poey's home to organize the donations into bags.

Donna dropped off the bags with Rebecca Nussbaum, the shelter's program director. Rebecca was very appreciative and said that the donations came just in time, as toiletries and other supplies were beginning to run low. She said that the women love it when the arrive and see the bags. Thanks to everyone who donated!

In November, we will be collecting canned goods and monetary donations for North County Community Services, which provides food for more than 18,000 people in need each month. You can bring your donations to our meeting on November 4 or to the Lunch Bunch on November 19. Can't attend either event but still want to donate? Contact Donna Poey to make arrangements.

Soak Up Some Culture!

Pauline Nutt has volunteered to organize an afternoon at the theater. If you'd like to take in a performance at the North Coast Repertory Theatre, peruse the upcoming shows and email Pauline with your preferences. Feel free to list as many plays as you like--we'll attend whichever show gets the most votes. Pauline says she hasn't had too many responses yet, so if you enjoy going to the theater, be sure to make your selection soon! Note that we can get a group rate of $35 to $45 if we have at least 10 attendees. Friends and family are welcome to join us.

National News

Recruitment Update
Fall formal recruitment is coming to a close and Alpha Chi Omega has had an incredible recruitment season. Since August, we have welcomed over 4,000 new members to our sisterhood!

At the University of Kentucky, we re-colonized our Delta Omega chapter by recruiting over 200 women. Similarly, we colonized for the first time at Florida Gulf Coast University and added over 200 women to this new chapter. In the spring, we look of forward to colonizing at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and Western Oregon University.

Thanks to alumnae like you, Alpha Chi Omega received over 10,000 recommendation forms for potential new members across the country!

2016 National Convention
Registration for Convention 2016 will go live in early January, so be watching your email.

The alumna initiate program is looking for candidates that are interested in joining Alpha Chi Omega. There will be an initiation ceremony will take place at convention 2016 in Orlando. In other words, NOW is the time to start the process if any alumnae chapters have potential alumna initiates that they want to initiate at convention. It can take several months to complete the process. For additional information, contact Marsha Massel, Education and Engagement Coordinator.

It's not too late to nominate a sister for Alpha Chi Omega's Outstanding Alumnae Awards!
These awards recognize exceptional alumnae making positive impacts in their communities, in their professions and in Alpha Chi Omega. The deadline for the 2016 awards is Saturday, October 31, 2015, so don't delay. You can find the application online.

Lyre Spotting

Just for fun...send us your photos of lyres spotted in the wild! Pauline Nutt is our expert lyre spotter. She unearthed these awards from high school orchestra and band while sorting through some old boxes. The B is from Brentwood High in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which Pauline attended from grades 7 through 9, and the H is from Helix High in La Mesa, California.

Also, Alexa Apallas spotted this lyre-backed chair at a thrift shop in Oceanside. Keep your eyes peeled, ladies!
