Upcoming Events

Monday, December 11, 6:00 PM--My Favorite Things Holiday Celebration at Donna Poey's Home
Brighten your sisters' spirits by bringing your favorite thing to our gift exchange. Here's how it works:
  • Bring a gift bag valued at $10 and filled with your favorite things. You could include one item or multiple items.
  • If you wish, you can bring more than one gift bag. Just fill each bag with the same favorites.
  • Your name will be entered into the drawing once for every bag you bring.
  • You'll go home with the same number of bags you came with, and you'll discover new favorites!
Donna will provide the main dish, and the rest of us will bring appetizers, salads, desserts, and wine to share. But if you've had a hectic day and can't bring anything with you, show up anyway! We'd love to see you.
RSVP to Linda Sheldone.
Philanthropy--Gift cards and toiletries for Carol's House. Check out the Philanthropy Corner for the full list.

Thursday, December 14, 11:30 AM--Lunch Bunch at Jake's Del Mar, 1660 Coast Blvd., Del Mar

Practice your dice-rolling and brush up on your AXO knowledge for a little sisterly competition. RSVP to Linda Sheldone.

News and Notes

Panhellenic Excellence
The San Diego County Alumnae Panhellenic Chapter has received the National Panhellenic Conference Programming Excellence Award. This award recognizes the success of the San Diego Alumnae Panhellenic in meeting the criteria of high achievement and consistent cooperation with NPC. This includes furthering sorority life by communicating with NPC and the area coordinator along with providing outstanding support to the sorority experience through marketing/publicity, philanthropic involvement, scholarship and sorority education in the community.

The Programming Excellence Award recognizes achievement by Alumnae Panhellenic Chapters that have outstanding activities and events involving their membership, such as special events, sisterhood programming, fundraisers, philanthropy activities, and scholarship programming.

Convention Is Coming!
Save the date for this year's National Convention from June 29 through July 1 in Austin, Texas. Austin is known for its live music scene, making it the perfect place to honor Alpha Chi's musical heritage. Registration will open in January, but you can start planning now. Let's make sure that KOK has lots of attendees. This will be my first convention, and my Big Sis and I are going to be roomies. And in addition to participating in all that convention has to offer, I'm definitely staking out a spot in line at the famous Franklin Barbecue!

Get to Know Your Board Members

We'll periodically feature new and returning board members. This month, we welcome Siobhan Fitzsimon, KOK's collegiate relations chair for Kappa Lambda.

Siobhan is an alumna of Kappa Lambda at the University of San Diego. She's originally from San Francisco but is now loving the San Diego life. She has two roommates, also Kappa Lambda alumnae. Her hobbies include cooking, baking, and traveling. When Siobhan studied abroad in Madrid in 2015, she made it a point to visit a new country every other weekend. So far, she's been to 16 countries, and she plans to continue her travels internationally and in the United States. Her next international stop is Scotland.

Siobhan works as a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton on projects for the U.S. Navy. Her secret to success is putting herself out there, moving outside her comfort zone, and being willing to say yes.

"If you had asked me a year or two ago I would have never thought I’d be working as a consultant for the U.S. Navy (I knew absolutely nothing about the military), but I am loving my job and all of the new skills I'm learning," she says.

Thanks for joining the KOK board, Siobhan!

Sisters Snaps

This is your space to celebrate notable career achievements, marriages, anniversaries, and births. Please submit news and photos to Alexa K. Apallas.

On November 7, KOK members gathered at Danielle Jackola's home to make festive fall decorations out of wine corks. Armed with glue guns, corks, ribbon, and sparkly bits (plus a little wine), we crafted pumpkins and other seasonal designs. Thanks to Danielle for hosting, and thanks to everyone who joined in the fun!
KOK sisters gathered at Solterra Winery and Kitchen on November 16 to enjoy a delicious lunch. If you missed out, join the next Lunch Bunch on December 14 at Jake's Del Mar.

Collegiate News

Kappa Lamdba had an eventful November!

On November 7, Kappa Lambda hosted Apple Pie with Alpha Chi, where chapter members handed out apple pie and gave students a chance to write letters of appreciation to their favorite professors. Sisters then delivered the letters to each professor. Thanking the professors who do so much for the students is an important way for Kappa Lambda to uphold Alpha Chi's commitment to intellectual development.

Kappa Lambda celebrated its 12th birthday on November 16 with lots of sweets and balloons in the middle of campus.

On November 18, Kappa Lambda joined with other chapters at USD to enjoy a day out at the horse races in Del Mar.

Philanthropy Corner

KOK continues to collect personal care items for Carol's House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence. In October, we donated 30 fully stocked bags to the shelter, and they turned out beautifully. Heather Johnson, our contact at Carol's House, sent a nice thank-you note and a picture of herself with all the bags.

We plan to make another delivery in April, and we need your donations! Next time you're at Target or Rite Aid, why not pick up an item on this list?

  • Combs and brushes
  • Shampoo and conditioner (full size and travel size)
  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Razors
  • Feminine hygiene products (pads, not tampons)
  • Sunscreen
  • Makeup, especially mascara
  • Journals
  • Sewing kits
  • Post-Its
  • Pens
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Nail care items and nail polish

Bring your donations to any event, or contact VP Philanthropy Donna Poey to arrange for dropoff.

In addition, we're making the holiday season festive for Carol's House by donating gift cards to Target, Walmart, Vons, and Ralphs. We'll be collecting the gift cards at the My Favorite Things Holiday Celebration on December 11.

"Shopping With Your Sisters" Spotlight

KOK extends a heartfelt thank you to the three businesses who have joined the Shopping with Your Sisters program: Shay Collective, Mary Kay, and Premier Designs.

This month, we spotlight Rohry Terhune, a jewelry stylist with Premier Designs.

Premier Designs is a biblically based company that offers high quality, versatile, and on-trend jewelry to suit every style. As a jewelry stylist, Rory provide opportunities for women to hostess parties, get together with girlfriends, learn some fun style tips, laugh, and earn tons of FREE and half-price jewelry. In-home style sessions, Facebook parties, catalog and fundraisers are all options. And you can always shop online.

"If you're looking for a flexible way to make some extra income, Premier could be right for you. Jewelry stylists earn 50% of every sale, with no quotas, and no inventory. I have found some of the most sincere, supportive women to go through life with while working with Premier Designs," Rohry says. "I love what I do, and I’m sure you’d love either getting a ton of free bling or earning some extra income. I’m happy to share this amazing company with you!

The holidays are upon us, and jewelry makes a lovely gift. Check out the Premier Designs catalog.

KOK members who own their own business are invited to join the Shopping with Sisters program, which provides advertising and helps KOK generate money for its programs. Download the form to secure your spot today. We hope all our KOK sisters will support the businesses who are supporting us!
