KOK Holiday Extravaganza

Karina Shaver hosted our holiday event in her gorgeous home, and sisters enjoyed a delicious buffet and a holiday shopping boutique. We also started a new tradition--the "Favorite Things" gift exchange, where each sister brought an item she loves. We all enjoyed finding our new favorite things and celebrating the spirit of the season.

Support an Indie Artist
Sandra Evans, a new member of KOK, has been chosen to exhibit her artwork at Futures at the House of Blues in San Diego on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. The event is put on by RAW, an organization dedicated to showcasing indie talent in visual art, film, fashion design, music, performance art, hair and makeup artistry, and photography. Sandra will be exhibiting under the name Sandy Bee. Let's all show our support for our sister by attending this fun event--tickets can be purchased for $20 in advance or for $25 at the door. If you purchase tickets in advance, be sure to indicate that your purchase is meant to be credited to Sandy Bee!

Meet Your Board Members

Each month, we'll profile several board members so you can learn more about the KOK leadership team.

Maya (Marie) Lippert Botvinick, President
Maya is a California native who was initiated into the Epsilon Kappa chapter at California State University, Fullerton. She has been deeply involved with Alpha Chi Omega since joining the sisterhood, and her previous positions include National Housing Corporation Board of Directors, National Expansion team member, Province Alumnae Chair, Province Collegiate Chair, California State and Province Day Chair, Chapter Advisor, and House Corporation President and Treasurer.

Maya lives in Oceanside with her husband, Michael, their daughter, Zahava (age 9), their son, Ari (age 6), and their cat, Michaelangelo. She owns D’Or Solutions, which conducts site research and contract negotiations for anyone planning a meeting with at least 20 sleeping rooms a night. She is also an enthusiastic volunteer. In addition to her work with Alpha Chi Omega, she volunteers at synagogue, as a room parent, and with her children’s school theater productions. She enjoys reading, travel, and spa time.

For Maya, success stems from patience, passion, organization, and dedication. Her burning desire is to live in France for a year.

Pauline Harper Nutt, Secretary
Pauline was initiated into the Gamma Nu chapter at San Diego State University. She earned her master's degree in library science at Simmons College in Boston and is a retired elementary school teacher. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and she currently resides in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, but she has lived all over the world, including in Crailsheim and Bad Toelz, Germany, and Yokota, Japan, where she taught at Department of Defense-dependent schools. Pauline also worked as a substitute teacher in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, and as a library media teacher in Parkrose, Oregon, near Portland.

Pauline lost her first soulmate, Sam Nutt, in 2003, after almost 38 years of marriage. She was lucky enough to find a second soulmate in Jan Rohling. Her children, Eric and Stephanie, live in Oregon with their families and Pauline has two granddaughters and a grandson. Her hobbies include studying various forms of dance, including tap, acrobatic, ballet, modern, flamenco, and currently, Zumba! She loves music of all kinds and sings with Jan in the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living Choir. She's also a baseball fan, and she enjoys theater.

Pauline attributes her success to being responsible and following up on commitments. She enjoys learning about the power of the mind and what we can do to manifest thoughts into physical reality. Her burning desire is to let go of judgment.

Brooke Stites, Panhellenic Delegate
Brooke is an initiate of the Kappa Lambda chapter at San Diego University. She is originally from Sammamish, Washington, and her mom, and alumnae initiate of Alpha Chi Omega, still lives in the Seattle area. Brooke now lives in Oceanside. Her younger brother, Chase, lives in Orange County and is an alumnus of Phi Gamma Delta.

Brooke is the director of business development for Affinity Consultants, a Greek licensing company. In addition to serving as KOK's Panhellenic Delegate, Brooke is a chapter advisor for Gamma Nu (SDSU) and a CRS Specialist. She also serves on the Young Alumnae Leadership Panel. Her secret to success is, in her words, "embracing the experience of your journey and realizing that the journey itself is just as important as where it takes you."

In her free time, Brooke enjoys hiking, tennis, travel, and baking. Her burning desire is to travel to Italy.

Seeking an Alumnae Recruitment Information Chair

From time to time, young women contact KOK seeking letters of recommendation as they go through the recruitment process. KOK is seeking an alumnae recruitment information chair (ARIC) to handle this process. The ARIC is responsible for speaking with the potential new member (PNM), either in person or over the phone, and submitting an online recommendation form. On the recommendation form, you'll need to provide:

  1. PNM’s first and last name
  2. College or university PNM is attending
  3. What year PNM will be in school during recruitment
  4. PNM’s physical address (including city, state and ZIP code)
  5. Names of PNM’s parents/guardians
  6. Name of PNM’s high school (including city and state)
  7. PNM’s high school graduation year
  8. PNM’s high school cumulative GPA
  9. Your name to endorse the recommendation

Serving as ARIC is a great way to get more involved with Alpha Chi Omega and support KOK. If you're interested in taking on this role, please get in touch with Maya Botvinick.

Take in a Play with KOK

Pauline Nutt has organized an afternoon at the theater! At 2:00 on Sunday, January 31, the theater-lovers among us will attend the world premiere production of "Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Great Nome Gold Rush", by Joseph Vass, directed by David Ellenstein, performed at the North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach. The play is described as a "wild and wooly adventure full  of intrigue, mystery, deception--a fun-filled whodunit" in which "the world’s greatest sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, will prove a client innocent of murder, even if it means traveling to the Wild West frontier town of Nome, Alaska."

You may purchase tickets directly from Pauline at a discounted price of $42.50. But don't delay--only a limited number of discounted tickets are available. Pauline has also offered to host an after-theater gathering at her home in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Email her for all the details.

Introducing Alpha Chi Omega's Newest Chapters!
On November 12, Alpha Chi Omega installed the two newest collegiate chapters. The Delta Omega chapter was re-installed at the University of Kentucky with a founding member class of more that 250 women. Thirteen sororities call UK home, and Alpha Chi is excited to be a part of that vibrant Panhellenic community once again. The Kappa Chi chapter at Florida Gulf Coast University was also installed on November 12, and is home to 200+ founding members. This chapter becomes our ninth collegiate chapter in the state of Florida. FGCU is a young and rapidly growing community dedicated to establishing a national prominence – a mission that aligns with Alpha Chi Omega’s goal of seeking the heights.

Spring Colonization
This spring Alpha Chi Omega will colonize at two additional campuses. Alpha Chi Omega is excited to join the Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) Greek community, home to 19 fraternities and sororities. IUPUI is proud to be the place where “campus and city connect” – and we anticipate that our newest Alpha Chi Omega chapter will be the place where IUPUI’s real, strong women connect.

Adding our fifth collegiate chapter to the state, Alpha Chi Omega is proud that we’re growing in Oregon! Our new chapter will be the first National Panhellenic Conference sorority on campus at Western Oregon University – we’re looking for collegiate women who are ready to leave a legacy on the WOU campus.

A Moment in Alpha Chi History
During the First World War, Alpha Chi Omegas everywhere, like their contemporaries in other fraternities, did all in their power to assist in wartime activities. Red Cross sewing, bandage making and knitting were done in all groups; entertainment for soldiers came from many chapters, while one turned over its chapter house for government use. The Fraternity as a whole adopted more than one hundred orphaned children from France. Twenty-nine Alpha Chi Omegas served their country overseas. These were the women we recognized on our first Dedication Award, which hangs in the museum. This information is timely as we review our hopes to provide a wonderful experience for our sisters and to plant the seeds of caring and giving of our time and gifts to others.

Lyre Spotting

Picture
Lyres were everywhere this holiday season! As Pauline Nutt, our lyre-spotting expert put it, "angels with lyres show up in multitudes!" She spotted this one at the the entrance to Somerford Place Care Center on El Camino Real where Seaside Carolers sang.
